Writing a Covering Letter (and example)

Nearly every application should be accompanied by a covering letter. A covering letter gives you the chance to say more to an employer before they read your CV.

It allows you to show an understanding of the post being applied for, the organisation and how your skills and talents relate to it. It’s the perfect opportunity to link the job advert to the specifics in your CV.

Style

A covering letter should be addressed to a named person if known, however “Dear Sir or Madam” will suffice if not - it’s worth calling the company, or doing a little digging to find out who you’re communicating with however.

Keep the letter short, and to the point - not an essay. It should never be more than a page, and should include any information you have been asked to give.

Make each paragraph count, themed around a particular topic or area.

You should use the standard business letter layout, with your address first on the right hand side. Then the address of the person you are writing too on the left. Finally add the date on the right hand side before beginning the main content.

Content

The letter should firstly introduce yourself, and state which position is being applied for - or if the letter is purely speculative the type of work required. It’s worth adding where you saw the position advertised, or how you heard about it.

The next paragraphs should demonstrate understanding of the role applied for, and relate it to your current and past work and academic experience.

Take the chance to explain any gaps or problems in your CV! If you were out of work for a while, it’s better to allay any doubts as to why now, before an employer reads the CV.
