Interviews shouldn’t be one sided!
An interview should never be a one way process, many candidates, especially those in the situation for the first time feel that only the interviewer should be asking the questions!
Getting an interview is the best opportunity you will get to find out more about the company, and people, you will work with and for. Asking questions not only gives you accurate information about any queries you may have, but shows a great deal about you.
The questions you ask should create dialogue, making the interview less of a one sided affair. They should also be used to show areas you feel are important.
Questions should always be aimed to show interest, or understanding - not to trip up the interviewer. You have nothing to gain by making an enemy of them. Instead use your questions to create empathy for the companies position and the responsibilities of the job. By showing that you’re keen to have a clearly defined role, and not just any job, you also boost your own image.
Examples of questions to ask:
- What kind of training and development opportunities does the company and position offer?
- What kind of review and assessment mechanisms are in place in the company?
- Is there a clearly defined management structure, who will you be working for?
- Is there opportunity to work outside of your core area and expand your horizons?
- Could the interviewer provide you with examples of current projects and there targets?
- What’s the most important issue facing the company at this moment in time?
- Where does the interviewer see the company in 5 years?
